About Me

Well after 5 years of teaching middle school math it was time for a change.  As much as I love math, I was looking for more.  So, what did I do...I thought back to when I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I was in the fifth grade.  I loved every day of fifth grade.  I don't remember a single thing I learned, academically speaking.  However, I did learn a love for learning.  My teacher, Mrs. Conlin, was amazing.  She loved us and loved learning.  We had fun and did fun things.  I am sure we learned a great deal along the way, but most importantly she instilled the "life long learner" bug in all of us.  That is when I knew I wanted to be a teacher.

It just so happened the following school year the opportunity came along for me to switch grades.  I jumped even though I thought I was nuts every step of the way.

Boy, am I glad I jumped.  Fifth grade is just where I needed to be.  This starts my second year as a fifth grade teacher and seventh year overall.

I think the most important part of being a teacher is impacting your students in a positive way and helping them prepare for the future as good citizens, creative thinkers, and hard workers.

So why start blogging?  Well, after many hours on the hunt I found so many fantastic education blogs out on the web...but NONE that focused on the fifth grade teacher.  Fifth grade is SO important! It is such an important year for our students.  I hope that I can share what I am learning along the way but also create a  place where all us awesome fifth grade teachers can start compiling our awesome ideas.

On the personal side:  I am married to my high school sweetheart (who is also a teacher, HS chemistry) and we just welcomed home a sweet baby boy at the end of last school year.  I have a great dog named Hero that all of my past students can tell you many stories about.  He is like having a class pet that stays at home :)
